The World Flying Disc Federation (WFDF) is pleased to announce that the WFDF 2018 World Junior Ultimate Championships (WJUC 2018) will be staged in the city of Waterloo at RIM and Kiwanis Parks from Sunday 19th – Saturday 25th August, 2018. Located in the Greater Toronto Area, Waterloo is home to the third largest Ultimate league in Ontario, with 850 active members and an established youth league.
The tournament organizing committee (TOC) will be headed up by Andrew Portwine, who sits on the Ultimate Canada and the Ontario Ultimate Boards of Directors, and who has acted as Tournament Director for the Canadian University Ultimate Championships in 2011 and the Canadian Ultimate National Championships which hosted 86 teams in 2014. “The TOC will be comprised of many returning staff from past Canadian National events, bringing both experience and the skills to successfully host WJUC 2018,” said WFDF President Robert “Nob” Rauch. “We expect they will be able to put on a world class event that will properly showcase the talent and skill of our next generation of global competitors.”
The championship is held bi-annually and is comprised of national teams competing in the Junior Under-20 Men’s and Women’s divisions. The WFDF 2016 WJUC was held this summer in Wroclaw, Poland, where the event attracted a record 49 teams and 1,000 athletes from 29 countries, which was the greatest number of participating countries ever. “Our WJUC served as a test event for next summer’s World Games in Wroclaw and the players and local community both embraced it,” said Rauch.
Event Director Andrew Portwine commented that “The City and Region of Waterloo are ready, willing, and able to host the 2018 World Junior Ultimate Championships. This will be a continuation from our successful hosting of prior National Ultimate events. We look forward to being able to showcase our beautiful city and the wonderful talents of global youth ultimate. The local organizing committee and the greater Waterloo community is looking forward to welcoming the world with open arms. It will be our pleasure to host ultimate players, coaches and their families from the world over while putting on a truly world class event for all to enjoy.”
